The Uganda Studies Program, pending final approval, will begin in Spring 2004. Many details are yet to be worked out, but the general shape of the course is clear.

  • About fifteen students from CCCU colleges will live with about forty African counterparts in the "Honours College" complex of dorms in the center of the campus.

  • CCCU students will learn Luganda, the local Bantu language and will spend time living with local Ugandan families and worshiping with them. (Classes will be conducted in English.)

  • CCCU students will take at least two courses in African history and culture, African religions, and African literature. In addition, they will choose courses from the regular curriculum.

  • The University will have at least one visiting professor. In Spring 2004, for instance, Dr. Malcolm Reid, from the Gordon College philosophy department, will be resident in Uganda.

  • The Honours College will provide an environment for American students to interact with their peers, in fellowship and prayer and discussing Friday video shows. The College will have a Ugandan Coordinator and American Resident Advisors. The first RA's are recently married Wheaton graduates.

  • CCCU students will also meet together to process their experience. They will take several planned trips and be exposed to rural Africa, as a tourist, to sites like game parks.

The first students in the Uganda Studies Program will be "pioneers." Before long, we believe the program will become a popular option for many students at CCCU colleges who are seeking to broaden their cultural horizons.
